Program Levels
The main platform for Techs Help Teens is an iterative multi-level system of classroom and online interactions that help the Student and Mentor gradually progress through the program. All interactions both in classroom and online are monitored by staff and recorded, and all participants are instructed on safe communication protocols and are encouraged to report any concerns immediately. The skills and knowledge gained in the collaboration between the various stakeholders’ help both the Student and the Mentor grow as an IT resource and as an individual.
Initial Intake
A one hour information session will be conducted once every six months at a centralized location within Pinellas County. This Intake Session will provide details for prospective tutors and teens regarding the program and allow staff to evaluate the specific needs of applicants. A short digital presentation is followed by a question and answer open forum. Interested parties will then be invited to join via an online application process. The two week application process concludes with approved applicants being asked to vote on one of three real world business projects to complete during the term.
Level One
Basic office skills and software introduction is the focus of the first level of training. Students will be provided access to software downloads and Computer Based Training modules (CBT) to learn basic skills in office tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Messenger, MS Project, etc.. Bi-Weekly classroom sessions will also be offered by experienced instructors in areas that include professional office conduct, appropriate attire, and time management skills. Mentors will be given access to CBT modules outlining rights and responsibilities, mentoring techniques, and guidelines for student interaction.
Level Two
Free software downloads and CBT tutorials will be offered to familiarize Students with the specific programs and Integrated Development Environments (IDE) they will be using to manage projects/tasks and to build applications. Students will receive training on all phases of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) from idea inception to user acceptance. Bi-Weekly classroom sessions will be offered by experienced instructors in areas that include application design and development, coding techniques, project management, and packaging deliverables. Mentors will have access to collaboration tools to assist in knowledge exchange and guide students along the project path. Emphasis will be placed on achieving stated project milestones and delivery dates. The skills learned will help students easily transition into real word job placements.
Level Three
Interviews and Internships are the focus of the third level of the program, and students are provided the remaining skills and knowledge needed to function in a professional office workspace. Online CBT modules and bi-weekly classroom training sessions provide the information needed to successfully interview and land real world IT and office positions and internships. Mentors will track the application and interview process, as well as reporting progress back to staff. Students also receive access to materials they may need for the interview process, such as appropriate attire, briefcases, hardware, and any other services required by HR and IT hiring managers.
Completion
Once Students and Mentors have successfully completed each level, they will have made a permanent change in each other’s lives. After gaining the basic office skills and specialization training in their field of interest, students will better prepared and confident as they enter the work force, and mentors will learn many of the skills required in today’s IT world and gain experience as a resource manager. Completion of the program will also qualify individuals for a percentage of ownership in the business entities that are formed and will have the option to return to the program as a mentor in the future. An essential element in Techs Help Teens mission is to teach the importance of “Paying it Forward”.
